What a wedding! I think I seriously geeked out over this event multiple times. I met Jimmy, Melissa, Carla (mother of the bride), Pat (Mother of the groom), and Dick (Father of the groom) after they had booked us via phone chat. We met up in downtown Cary to start venue shopping and to get to know each other a little. Right off the bat I knew this was going to be a sweet couple and really great planning experience.
First off- they are both Math majors. Which if you don't know me, I have a BS in Chemistry and a BA in Math - so I knew that on some level we connected. They were in real fancy pants math classes - but I could totally relate to the way they processed information and their love for spreadsheets. They both were planning from afar as they were in graduate school in the midwest.
Second- they really trusted my vision and direction. It makes my job so much easier when a client simply says - "I trust you." Sounds simple enough, but it makes the world of difference. I also felt like Jimmy and Melissa wanted the big wedding, but not for the purpose of being in the center of attention - in fact I think they preferred not to be - but they wanted to gather all their favorite people in one spot and just enjoy their company. Knowing that that was their ultimate goal made the planning process have a solid footing and some easy decisions.
After a few days we settled on Duke Gardens. The next time Melissa came in town we picked our caterer, rentals, and design concept. This is where it gets really fun. Jimmy and his mom read all the Harry Potter books when he was a kid. Melissa equally loved the series so through many conversations I just asked - "do you want this to be a HP themed weddings?" They hesitantly said yes - and after some more digging they were just worried that it would be too much and not elegant or pretty. I assured them that we could do this in a way that was fun, tasteful, and not over the top. I am SO excited with how it turned out!
I immediately called Terri with Get Lit to ask if it was possible to have floating candles. Her answer- anything is possible! Duke Gardens is especially tricky since there are not a lot of points of connection - luckily I had just worked with them a few months before I inquired about market lighting in the hall- so we had some good ideas as to what we could do. It was literally the show stopper. It was SO cool!! For centerpieces we did a simple arrangement with candles, old math books, and compotes. Guests ate family style and enjoyed a golden snitch favor with a Maurader's Map Menu. It was so much fun to put it all together!
The night went so well and I was so glad that I got the opportunity to work with not only Jimmy and Melissa but the whole family. You could tell that they were just so loved . Jimmy and Melissa- thank you so much letting be a part of your day - it was truly such a pleasure!
